Chapter Eleven
Schools, Healthcare & the Honest Infrastructure Guide
One of the most common questions from families considering the move: what about the kids? And the doctor? And the hospital? These are the right questions, and they deserve honest answers.
Education
Dorado has a solid international school ecosystem, and the community of Act 60 families has helped build out the options considerably over the past decade:
Dorado Academy
One of the leading private schools in the Dorado area, offering a rigorous English-language education from PreK through high school. Strong academic reputation within the community. The school of choice for many Act 60 families.
Caribbean School
A long-established bilingual private school serving the northern coast area. Strong academics and a genuine Puerto Rican cultural component that many Act 60 families value for raising children who are genuinely connected to the island.
TASIS Dorado
TASIS Dorado is an independent, non-sectarian, coeducational college-preparatory school serving PPK through Grade 12. English is the primary language of instruction, and its Sabanera campus makes it especially practical for families living in that community.
Alpha Dorado
Alpha Dorado is a K–8 private school in nearby Vega Alta built around a mastery-based, AI-supported academic model. It is a distinct option rather than a conventional college-preparatory school, so families should visit, understand the daily model, and compare it directly with their child’s learning style.
International Options
Several international schools in the broader San Juan area serve families who want IB (International Baccalaureate) or other internationally standardized curricula. The commute from Dorado is manageable and many families make it work.
The Truth About Schools
Compared to the best private schools in Manhattan, Los Angeles, or Miami — the schools here are good, not exceptional. For most families, they are more than adequate and the tradeoff is obviously worth it. For families whose children are in critical pre-college years targeting the most competitive U.S. university admissions, you should have an honest conversation with school counselors about options.
Healthcare
This is an area where honest guidance really matters. Puerto Rico has excellent healthcare at the top tier — qualified specialists, modern facilities, competent general practitioners — but the system overall is not the equivalent of a major U.S. metropolitan medical center.
What we recommend:
Identify a primary care physician in the Dorado area within your first 30 days — don't wait
For urgent or emergency care in Dorado, know the route to Doctors’ Center Hospital Orlando Health – Dorado before you need it. Confirm current emergency services and save the directions in every family phone. For a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
For any serious or specialized medical need, know where you're going. The best hospitals in Puerto Rico are in the San Juan area — San Jorge Children's Hospital for pediatrics, Hospital Ashford for general acute care, several specialty centers for cardiac, oncology, and other areas
Maintain your relationship with a specialist or two on the mainland for anything complex — it's 3 hours to Miami
Medical evacuation insurance is worth the cost. It's not expensive and it's peace of mind you'll appreciate
Concierge medicine practices are growing in the Dorado area and serve the Act 60 community well — ask in the DBI community for current recommendations
Internet & Connectivity
Critical for remote workers and business operators: Puerto Rico's internet infrastructure has improved substantially since Maria, but it remains behind mainland standards in reliability. Starlink has been a game-changer for many Dorado residents — particularly as a backup to the primary fiber or cable service. Most serious remote workers operate with two internet connections.
Everything Else
Grocery stores: the Dorado area has good options, including high-quality specialty markets. You will not find every brand you relied on — this is actually fine and leads to eating better. Costco is in the San Juan area (worth the drive on a regular basis). Amazon delivers.
Restaurants: genuinely excellent, and improving every year. The Act 60 community has raised the demand for high-quality dining and the restaurant scene has responded. The Ritz restaurants are exceptional and, importantly, you'll have access to them regularly rather than occasionally.
Safety: Dorado Beach is among the safest communities in Puerto Rico. The gated community structure, private security, and the demographics of the neighborhood create a living environment that most residents feel is safer than the U.S. cities they came from. Puerto Rico as a whole has areas with serious crime; Dorado Beach is not one of them.
